OIE recognizes HSADL for avian flu

International Workshop on Biosafety inaugurated at HSADL
The three day workshop on Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity was inaugurated by Chief guest Honourable Dr. Ajay Vishnoi, Minister for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Backward Class and Minorities Welfare, Govt of M. P. on 17th Nov at 10:00 AM. The Joint Director of HSADL Dr. S. C. Dubey welcomed the international and national experts on biosafety and the participants. He specially mentioned that HSADL has been functional since last 10 years continuously and without major breakdown. He also expressed his gratitude towards all the governments of MP during last 20-25 years for their support and problem solving attitude. Chief guest designated this lab as Pride of MP and praised the achievements of HSADL at the forefronts of bird flu diagnosis & control due to which the lab has been awarded OIE (World health organization for animal health) recognition. The minister commended the scientists and staff for their contribution and promised for continued whole-hearted support of govt. of MP towards this laboratory in future. Two representatives namely Dr. H. K. Pradhan and Dr. Ritu S. Chauhan joined the function from WHO India Office. Dr. Michael Johnson, Head, Pirbright lab, UK delivered first lecture on risk assessment of organisms and biosafety requirements. In post lunch session Dr. H. K. Pradhan delivered lecture on facility design and commissioning of biosafety laboratories. It was followed by lecture of Dr. D. T. Maurya from National Institute of Virology, Pune on emergency response planning in containment laboratories. Later on, special types of personal protective equipments were demonstrated along with visit of the delegates to various external installations of the containment laboratory.

HSADL gets international recognition
The long-awaited recognition for High Security Animal Disease Laboratory by Office International Epizooties (OIE) the world's apex organization for Animal Health came into effect at the OIE's headquarter at its 77th General Session held at Paris on 28th May, 2009. Dr. S. C. Dubey gave this news following his return from Paris. With this event, HSADL becomes the third OIE-recognized reference lab for avian influenza in Asia after Japan and China and 9th in the world....

What is BVD
Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) is a highly damaging, contagious, worldwide prevalent viral disease of cattle. The disease has been listed by OIE as a priority disease in cattle. It has many clinical presentations although, interestingly enough, diarrhea is not the most common observation. BVD is related to both border disease (BD) of sheep and goats and classical swine fever CSF) of pigs.
